    Description

Adverse Childhood Experiences Course. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are highly stressful, and potentially traumatic, events, or situations that occur during childhood and adolescence. Learn about different types of ACEs and how they can impact on health and wellbeing (both short and long-term), risk and protective factors for adversity, and how to help build resilience that lasts a lifetime. This course is suitable for childcare and care practitioners, educators, and parents and carers.

    Learning objectives

    • You will understand the different types of ACEs and what can contribute to the vulnerability of a child or young person to experiencing a highly stressful event
    • You will understand the impact of toxic stress on children, especially younger children, and the importance of raising awareness of ACEs
    • You will know some strategies to build resilience in children and young people

Advantages of this adverse childhood experiences course

    • This course will help to explain ACEs, how common they are, and the impact they can have on child development, health and wellbeing, stress responses, and outcomes
    • Experiencing a childhood trauma does not have to result in negative outcomes. Interventions and timely support from caring adults can change a child’s life and put them on a better path for the future. This course will help people who support children and young people who are experiencing adversity, and build protective factors and resilience for those who may be at risk.
    • Good practice examples, activities, and further reading resources explore the topic in more depth and underpin the knowledge you will have gained in the ‘teaching’ sections of the course (tutorial, reading, and presentation sections)
