    The A Level course explores the study of English Language with emphasis on the ability of students to debate different views, investigate various lines of enquiry, and independently research aspects of language use. The specification draws upon a range of fields within the English language and linguistics subject area, including phonetics, accents and dialects, and socioeconomic impacts on audience perception. You will be encouraged to explore language diversity and change whilst considering race, religion, age, gender, class, and more as influential factors.

    Textual variations and representations are an important aspect of this qualification, giving you an insight into audience, purpose, genre, mode, format, function, and so on.

    In this course, you will be given texts to critically analyse to put the knowledge and skills learnt into practice.

    Course Syllabus

    Unit 1: Methods of language analysis

    • honetics, phonology, and prosodics: how speech sound and effects are articulated.
    • Graphology: the visual aspects of textual design and appearance.
    • Lexis and semantics: the vocabulary of English, including social and historical variation.
    • Grammar, including morphology: the structural patterns of English at sentence, clause phrase, and word level.
    • Pragmatics: the contextual aspects of language use.
    • Discourse: the extended stretches of communication occurring in different genres, modes, and contexts.

     

    Unit 2: Textual variations and representations

    • Study a range of texts about various subjects from a range of writers and speakers.
    • Study texts for different audiences and purposes in a variety of genres.
    • Study the similarities and differences between written, spoken, and electronic modes.

     

    Unit 3: Children’s language development

    • The functions of children’s language.
    • Phonological, pragmatic, lexical, semantic, and grammatical development.
    • Different genres of speech and writing.
    • Different modes of communication (spoken, written, multimodal).
    • Theories and research about language development.

     

    Unit 4: Diversity, change and language varieties

    • Texts using different sociolects (to include social and occupational groups, gender, and ethnicity).
    • Texts using different dialects (to include regional, national, and international varieties of English).
    • When analysing tests and data, students should explore how language varies because of personal, social, geographical, and temporal contexts.
    • Exploration will include methods of language analysis, how identity is constructed, and how audiences are addressed and positioned.

     

    Unit 5: Language in action (coursework)

    • A language investigation (2,000 words excluding data).
    • A piece of original writing and commentary (750 words each).

     

    Entry Requirements

    Although previous knowledge at GCSE level is an advantage, there are no previous qualifications required to register for this course.

    Course Duration

    When completing your studies with us, you dictate the speed of your learning. You can access your course for a period of 2 years. So whether you wish to complete over the traditional 2 year period or fast track in 1 year or less, the choice is yours!

    Total Qualification Time (TQT) – 700 Hours

    Our recommended minimum time is 7-9 hours per week, but each learner is different. The more you log in, the quicker you complete! We regularly experience students completing an A level in 4/6 months. It can be done !

    The AQA A-Level exam is available in May/June each year. It is assessed over 2 exam papers & coursework. The coursework component must be assessed as part of your examination. Exam Code – 7702

    Paper 1: Language, the individual and society. 

    • Type: written examination
    • Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
    • Weighting: 40% of total
    • Total marks: 100

    Section A – Textual variations and representations

    Two texts (one contemporary and one older text) linked by topic or theme.

    • A question requiring analysis of one text (25 marks).
    • A question requiring analysis of a second text (25 marks).
    • A question requiring comparison of the two texts (20 marks).

    Section B – Children’s language development

    A discursive essay on children’s language development, with a choice of two questions where the data provided will focus on spoken, written, or multimodal language (30 marks).

    • Type: written examination
    • Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
    • Weighting: 40% of total
    • Total marks: 100

     

    Paper 2: Language. diversity and change

    • Type: written examination
    • Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
    • Weighting: 40% of total
    • Total marks: 100

    It includes:

    • Language diversity and change.
    • Language discourses.
    • Writing skills.
    • Methods of language analysis are integrated into the activities.

    Section A – Diversity and change

    One question from a choice of two, either:

    • An evaluative essay on language diversity (30 marks).
    • An evaluative essay on language change (30 marks).

    Section B – Language discourses

    Two texts about a topic linked to the study of diversity and change.

    • A question requiring analysis of how the texts use language to present ideas, attitudes and opinions (40 marks).
    • A directed writing task linked to the same topic and the ideas in the texts (30 marks).

    Additional Examination Fees

    As a private candidate, it is the students responsibility to arrange their own examinations and practical assessment if required. This is not part of the service offered by UK Open College.

    This should be done prior to enrolment with us. It is your responsibility to ensure you have the necessary arrangements in place & confirmed. This is very easy to do but you need to book in advanced to avoid late booking fees. We estimate between £300.-£500 per subject (Not per paper)

    Fees for these services can vary hugely from centre to centre. It may be worth travelling out of area. (It’s worth it)

    You can also try www.tutorsandexams.uk who have a number of centres located across the UK. They deal with private candidates all the time and will be happy to help with booking if required.

    The later you leave it to arrange, the more expensive it can be. At times, it can be impossible to arrange so plan ahead. (6 months minimum recommended)

    Your contract with us is for the course and support only. We will not refund you outside of the 14 day cooling off period if you have not confirmed these arrangements with your selected centre.

    UCAS Points & Predicted Grades

    All of our A Levels will provide you with UCAS points upon successful completion of your examinations. The amount you receive will depend on the grade achieved as detailed below. Tutors can also provide predicted grades for university based on your completed assessments within the course.

    The majority of our A Levels will require a minimum of 3 completed assignments and correspondence to provide a predicted grade. We would advise you register for your course 3 months in advance of when you need a predicted grade for.  Eg: if you require a predicted grade for January, then you should enrol in Sept and aim to compete the 3 tutor marked assessments by December.
