UNIT 1: AN INTRODUCTION TO PRIMATES
Introduction of primates
Characteristics of the class Mammalia
System of taxonomic classification of animals
Compare the characteristics of apes and monkeys
The evolutionary history of primates
Identify common anatomical and physiological characteristics

UNIT 2: THE NEW WORLD MONKEYS
Global distribution of new world monkeys
Primates belonging to the Callitrichidae and Cebidae families including marmosets and Capuchins
Primates belonging to the Atelidae family including howler and spider monkeys
Primates belonging to the Aotidae and Pitheciidae families including owl monkeys, sakis and uakaris

UNIT 3: THE OLD WORLD MONKEYS
Global distribution of old world monkeys
Cercopithecinae I – Characteristics of species belonging to the Papionini tribe – including the macaques, baboons and drills
Cercopithecinae II – Characteristics of species belonging to the Cercopithecini tribe including the guenons, talapoins and mona monkeys
Old World monkeys belonging to the Colobinae subfamily

UNIT 4: THE PROSIMIANS
Geography and habitats of Madagascar
Global distribution of the prosimians
Primates belonging to the Strepsirrhini suborder
Primates belonging to the Haplorhini suborder

UNIT 5: THE LESSER APES & ORANGUTANS
Global distribution of the gibbons and orangutans
Species belonging to the Hoolock and Hylobates genera
Species belonging to the Symphalangus and Nomascus genera
Subspecies and characteristics of the species in the Pongo genus

UNIT 6: THE GREAT APES
Global distribution of the Great Apes
Species belonging to the Gorilla genus
Subspecies and characteristics of the common chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes
Subspecies and characteristics of the bonobo, Pan paniscus

 

Entry Requirements

There are no previous qualifications required. However, students looking to enrol onto this course should meet the following criteria:

Be aged 16 Years or above
Possess a solid knowledge of the English language
Have access to a PC and the internet for the duration of the whole course
Basic computer skills: e.g. Word processing, emailing, uploading documents etc
Have a genuine desire to succeed

Course Duration

This course comes with 12 months of support included:

Guided Learning Hours (GLH) – 80 Hours
Total Qualification Time (TQT) – 100 Hours

Study Method

Select between studying purely online or opt to receive a paper copy of your lessons in the post.

If you opt for a paper copy:

Your initial study pack will be posted to you within 7 days of making payment. Your course pack will contain all you need to start your course, including your course lessons, tutor details, support contact details and student study guide.

Learners are then able to prepare their assignments using a word processing program ready to be emailed directly to their tutor for marking.

Course Outcome

Assessment

Learners will be required to complete a series of tutor-marked assignments ( normally 1 after each unit) as they progress through this course. Each assignment will contain a variety of tasks/questions. These assignments are assessed by your tutor to monitor progress. You will be provided with constructive feedback to help you in completing each unit to the required standard.

There is no examination to complete as the course is completed using continual assessment.
