Lockdown procedures for schools are essential safety protocols designed to protect students, staff, and visitors during emergencies. These situations may include active shooter incidents, threats of violence, nearby criminal activity, or other dangerous situations. While specific procedures may vary depending on local regulations and the type of threat, the following general steps are often included in school lockdown plans:
Basic Lockdown Steps
Initiation:
- The lockdown is initiated by an announcement over the public address (PA) system or other communication systems. A clear and concise message should indicate the type of lockdown and instructions.
Securing the Building:
- Lock all classroom and office doors.
- Turn off lights to give the appearance of an empty building.
- Close blinds or shades on windows.
- Barricade doors if necessary, using furniture or other items.
- Keep students and staff away from windows and doors.
Silent Mode:
- Ensure everyone remains quiet to avoid drawing attention.
- Silence mobile phones and electronic devices.
Account for Students:
- Teachers take attendance to ensure all students are present.
- Report any missing or extra students to administrators if possible.
Communication:
- Use school-approved communication systems to provide updates.
- Avoid answering the door until an official “all clear” is given by law enforcement or school administrators.
