In simple terms: dementia describes ongoing problems with mental abilities, especially memory.
Common signs include
Forgetting recent events or conversations
Trouble finding words or following conversations
Difficulty planning or solving problems
Getting confused about time or place
Changes in mood, personality, or behavior
Needing help with daily tasks (like cooking or managing money)
Important things to know
Dementia mostly affects older adults, but it’s not a normal part of aging.
Symptoms usually get worse over time.
There are different types and causes, and some symptoms can be managed with treatment and support.
Learners will look at the role of the carer in the support and care of individuals with dementia. In particular the administration of medication to individuals using a centre-personed approach. Learn how to communicate with those who have dementia and understand their behaviour in the context of dementia.
