    Description

Cognitive Development online course. Cognitive development is the process by which we acquire, organise, and learn to use knowledge. It is widely recognised that early childhood is the most critical and sensitive time for brain (including cognitive) development, with another rapid learning stage in adolescence. Learn about cognitive development and an introduction to neuroscience, milestones, theorists, and the importance of sensory experiences, responsive adults, and enabling environments.

    Learning Outcomes

    • You will understand a definition of cognitive development and the ages and stages of cognitive development
    • You will know the main cognitive development theories – such as ZPD and scaffolding
    • You will understand the importance of the adult role, and the environment, in supporting cognitive development in children

Advantages of the cognitive development online course

    • A child’s relationship and interactions with the adults in their life, especially their primary caregivers, are the most important influence on their brain development. If a child does not have regular, positive interactions with the adults in their early lives then they are likely to have weaker brain connections. Toxic stress as a result of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) also negatively impact on brain development. This course explores how adversity affects the brain.
    • Additional activities encourage you to reflect on your learning
    • There is also suggested extended reading that gives both practical information and links to websites to expand knowledge
