This engaging qualification explores the literature, history, politics, philosophy, religion and art of the classical world, helping you understand how ancient civilisations have shaped modern society.     Throughout the course, you will study a range of classical texts and sources in English translation, meaning there is no requirement to learn Greek or Latin. The compulsory component, The World of the Hero, examines epic literature through the works of Homer and Virgil, allowing you to explore themes such as heroism, leadership, fate and identity. In addition, you will study one topic from the Culture and the Arts component and one from the Beliefs and Ideas component, investigating subjects such as Greek Theatre, Imperial Image, Greek Art, Love and Relationships, Greek Religion, Democracy and the Athenians, or Politics of the Late Republic. These topics encourage you to evaluate historical evidence, literary sources and artistic achievements while developing a deeper appreciation of the ancient world.

    Assessment is by three written examinations taken at the end of the course. The World of the Hero examination accounts for 40% of the final A Level, while the Culture and the Arts and Beliefs and Ideas examinations each contribute 30%. The assessments require students to analyse sources, construct well-supported arguments and demonstrate an informed understanding of classical civilisation.

    There are no previous qualifications required to register for this course.

    Course Duration

    This course comes with 24 months of support included:

    Guided Learning Hours (GLH) – 360 Hours
    Total Qualification Time (TQT) – 700 Hours

    Assessment

    To achieve the full Classical Civilisation A-Level you will be assessed across the 14 topics. All themes will be assessed by 3 paper-based examinations.

    Paper: The World of The Hero (H408/11)
    Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes
    Assessed: In-depth study one of Homer’s Iliad or Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid (The study of classical texts)

    Paper: Culture and the Arts (H408/24)
    Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes
    Assessed: Greek Art (The study of material and visual culture

    Paper: Beliefs and Ideas (H408/31)
    Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes
    Assessed: Greek Religion (The study of texts and visual/material culture)

    Examination Fees

    As a private candidate, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange their own examinations and practical assessment if required. This is not part of the service offered by UK Open College.

    This should be done prior to enrolment with us. It is your responsibility to ensure you have the necessary arrangements in place & confirmed.

    Fees for these services can vary hugely from centre to centre. It may be worth travelling out of the area. (It’s worth it)

    The later you leave it to arrange, the more expensive it can be. At times, it can be impossible to arrange so plan ahead. (8 months minimum recommended)

    Your contract with us is for the course and support only. We will not refund you outside of the 14 days cooling off period if you have not confirmed these arrangements with your selected centre.

    UCAS Points & Predicted Grades

    All of our A Levels will provide you with UCAS points upon successful completion of your examinations. The amount you receive will depend on the grade achieved as detailed below. Tutors can also provide predicted grades for university based on your completed assessments within the course for a fee of £60.00. This is a one off fee regardless of how many subjects are taken. For example: If you have taken 3 A level Subjects you only pay the £60.00 once (Not per Subject)

    The majority of our A Levels will require a minimum of 3 completed assignments and correspondence to provide a predicted grade. We would advise you register for your course 3 months in advance of when you need a predicted grade for.  Eg: if you require a predicted grade for January, then you should enrol in Sept and aim to compete the 3 tutor marked assessments by December.
